Vocabulary – Week of 9/10

Cognate

-When people are related, usually because they are in the same family.

-My brother and I are cognate, because people mistake us for each other.

Derivative

-Something that resulted from or is based on something else.

-acquired, ancestral, caused
-The number of unemployed people in Michigan is a derivative of our economic situation.

Diminutive

-Something that is very small or miniature.
-Adjective
-Picture:







-little, midget, mini
-The toy car is a diminutive of the actual vehicle.

Inflection

-To bend or change something, usually your voice.
-Noun
-Picture:






-articulation, change, emphasis
-I inflected my voice when our dog wasn’t following my instructions.

Orthography

-To write using proper words, spelling and grammar.
-Noun
-Picture:



-Spelling, grammar, linguistics
-I have never seen such impressive orthography from an author!
