CJ Davis's Vocab

Paradigm
  1. Words that contain a similar element, usually the base.
  2. Noun
  3. Synonyms- Pattern, set, group.
  4. Nautical and astronaut and paradigms, sharing the Laitn base word ‘nauta’.


Philology

  1. The study of books and records.
  2. Noun
  3. Synonyms- Linguistics, interpretation. Similar Suffix- Paleontology.
  4. Scribes were the epitome of philologists, studying old texts and translating or interpreting them.

Phonology

  1. The study of the pronunciation of words/sounds.
  2. Noun
  3. Similar Suffix- Anthropology, Geology, Biology
  4. Phonology is important when learning a foreign language since they can have differences in pronunciation of similar words.

Rhetoric

  1. The art of effective persuasion in speaking/writing.
  2. Noun
  3. Synonyms- Appeal, parley, homily.
  4. Rhetorical questions aren’t meant to be answered, but to spark thought.

Syntax

  1. The rules and patterns of words in a language.
  2. Noun
  3. Synonyms- Principles, rudiments, linguistics.
  4. Unless we know that syntax of a language, we cannon learn to speak it.

Watch your spelling. (i.e. "laitn" instead of "Latin," "have" instead of "hear," "that" instead of "the," and "cannon" instead of "cannot.")
