Cognate
  1. When something is similar to something else.
  2. Adjective
  3. Synonyms – akin, alike. Antonym- different.
  4. Football and rugby are cognate sports.

Derivative

  1. Something that comes from something else.
  2. Noun
  3. Synonym- offshoot. Antonyms- original, initial.
  4. ->
  5. New video games are derivatives of older games.

Diminutive

  1. When something is small.
  2. Adjective
  3. Synonyms- little, small, undersized
  4. Tall basketball players are diminutive compared to Yao Ming.

Inflection

  1. The change in pitch or tone of a voice.
  2. Noun
  3. Synonyms- articulation, variation, tonality.
  4. The inflection of Robert Plant’s voice made him a powerful tenor and popular singer.

Orthography

  1. The way letters are written in a language.
  2. Noun
  3. Etymological Synonyms- zoology, biology, anthropology
  4. The orthography of of Modern English is very specific; a “g” should never look like a “w”.
