Vocab

1. Cognate:
  • Someone who is related to you by blood.

  • Adjective.
  • Related, affiliated, generic.































(my family and I)

  • Those people are my cognate, that is my cousin Jake and his sister Alyssa.

  • Etymology: Latin cognatus, from co- + gnatus, natus, past participle of nasci to be born; akin to Latin gignere to beget -- more at kin.
2. Derivative
  • It comes from something else, it is not original.

  • Noun.

  • Acquired, ancenstral, caused.


















  • Matt is a derivative of Matthew.

  • Derivative is also known to be a type of math equation.
3. Dimiutive
  • Something that is small in size.

  • Adjective.

  • Little, midget, mini.


























  • All the guys loved Carrie, she was very diminutive, short and petite.

  • Etymology: Middle English diminutif, from Medieval Latin diminutivum, alteration of Late Latin deminutivum, from neuter of deminutivus, adjective, from deminutus, past participle of deminuere
4. Inflection
  • To change the pitch of your voice.

  • Noun.

  • Articulation, change, emphasis.
























  • When Alex scared Kara, she made an inflection to her voice by screaming at the top of her lungs.

  • In the terminology of grammar, the forms of nouns, pronouns, and adjectives can be arranged in declensions or inflections.


5. Orthography

  • Correct spelling.

  • Noun.

  • Spelling, punctuation, grammar.

  • Emily needed her paper edited, so I went through and marked all the orthography that needed to be done.
  • Orthography originated between 1425 and 1475.
